A Brief History of Davidson's Mains

We know there's loads of local historical knowledge out there, so let's bring it all together in one place. Here are a few snippets of commonly-known information to start things off.

  • Davidson's Mains takes its name from the Davidsons of Muirhouse, a wealthy family of merchants.
  • Davidson's Mains was originally called Muttonhole but by 1850 had its current name. The origins of the name Muttonhole are obscure and much-debated.
  • Davidson's Mains was once a rural village - there was countryside between here and Edinburgh, which was accessible by horse-bus!
  • Davidson's Mains first piped water arrived around 1832 when pipes were laid by Davidson's Mains Water Trust to springs on Corstorphine Hill. Previously, householders had to pick up their water from the well at the entrance to the park.
